| All in a Day When presenting to very young readers, I share the joy of my books and some of how I make them. When presenting to older readers, of course I share the joy found in my books but I mainly focus on seeing the books from the creator's point of view and the process in making them. This type of presentation is also fascinating for upper level through high school students and even adults. I share my enthusiasm for creating children's books. I explain how I turn the tiny seed of an idea into a book through the use of storyboard pages, reference photos, book dummies, and a great deal of perseverance. A daylong visit to your school can include up to four presentations. In a typical session I share how my roles as a mom and an art teacher evolved into a career as an author and illustrator of children's books. Each presentation includes original finished art, sketches, manuscript revisions, tons of book dummies, as well as samples from the various stages of the printing process from proofs to galleys. For moral support, the actual plush-toy-model Brave Bear usually accompanies me, making an appearance at each session. |

| For a Smooth Visit - easy as 1-2-3 1) Each session should be 45 minutes in length (30 minutes for kindergarten). Allow at least 15 minutes between groups because I need to reorganize my materials and my thoughts. 2) It is best that I speak in one location rather than traveling from room to room because I bring along a large number of props. 3) Groups should be approximately 60 students or less because I show original work, as opposed to slides. Also, presentations should be grouped by grade level, or near grade level, if combinations are necessary. |

| Book sales are most successful when an order form is sent home with the students a few weeks prior to the scheduled visit. All sales should be transacted before the day of the visit. It is helpful if each book to be autographed has a post-it note or slip of paper enclosed with the name to be inscribed printed clearly on it. I will be happy to autograph all books at the end of the day |

"During Artist and Author Night, children stopped in their tracks when they saw Mallat sitting in their school library. Many tugged at their parents with excitement; others just grabbed hands and led their parents to meet the woman who told them how they could create their own stories from simple things they’ve experienced. Emily Kahler, 7, was one of the many students whose excitement shone as she introduced her parents to a real author and artist. The student enjoyed Mallat’s books so much she had a difficult time deciding which was her favorite. "I like the part when she read "Mama Love." The baby was my favorite character because it has a nice face. I like how Mama held the baby . . . I want to be an artist, too." |
