About the Lupine Award

The Lupine Award is presented annually by the Youth Services Section (YSS) of the Maine State Library Association, to recognize an outstanding contribution to children's literature of Maine. This award is granted to encourage the reading, writing and appreciation of children's books, and to foster pride in the state of Maine. The Lupine Award is designed to honor a living author or illustrator who is a resident of Maine, or who has created a work whose focus is Maine, as shown through the work's characterization, plot or setting. An author or artist will be considered a resident if he or she was born in this state, or is currently residing in Maine for all or part of the year. In addition to the Lupine Award, books of noteworthy distinction may be selected for a Lupine Honor Titles to be considered must be appropriate for readers and listeners up to seventeen years of age. The work must have been published within the calendar year preceding the award, and it must be in print. Nominations are accepted year round from anyone for their review and discussions by a committee of eight Maine public and school librarians. Two members are from each of the three Maine Regional Library System Districts, and two others are the chair of the YSS Board and the Past Chair of the YSS Board. Members serve for two year terms. The mission of the Lupine Committee is to encourage the reading, writing, illustrating, and study of children's literature in Maine. The children's book Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, the beloved Maine author and artist was the inspiration for the Lupine Award. It is the story of great-aunt Alice Rumphius who as a little girl loved the sea, longed to visit faraway places and wished to do something to make the world more beautiful.
