About Me ~ Kathy Mallat
As a child, I spent countless hours creating treasures with scissors, crayons, a bottle of Elmer's and a host of old cereal boxes, newspapers, and magazines. It never occurred to me that I was making art. I just knew I was having fun. Though my art supplies have changed a bit over the years, making art remains my favorite pastime. It's still fun.

I was born on February 23, 1955 to David and Agnes Sherburne. I am the youngest of three children and grew up in Sunapee, New Hampshire. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in art education from Plymouth State College, and taught art at various levels for twenty one years before becoming a full time author and illustrator. Though I no longer have my own classroom, I visit schools to talk with children about the process of writing and illustrating children's books.

When I was little, making art was not only great entertainment, it also taught me early on how to enjoy my own company. That lesson proved to be quite valuable when I began working as an author and illustrator, since both jobs require many hours of solo work.

My husband, Steve, and I live in Lebanon, Maine. We are the parents of two lovely grown daughters, and in the summer of 2002, we also welcomed the addition of Erin's husband, our son-in-law, Steve Misek.

I never thought of being an author or illustrator until well into adulthood. Yet, looking back, everything seems to have pointed me in that direction. Looking forward, since I enjoy what I do so much I can't wait to start on the next book, and the book after that, and the book after that. I couldn't be happier.
